Chiropractor

A lot of people come to us already having decided they want to see a chiropractor, usually because a friend or family member had good results with one. Others aren't quite sure whether chiropractic care, physiotherapy, or something else entirely is the right fit for what they're dealing with. Both are completely reasonable starting points, and part of what we do at RehabDNA is help you figure out which approach, or which combination, actually makes sense for your situation.
Chiropractic is a licensed healthcare profession focused on your spine, joints, muscles and nervous system, built around the idea that your body has a real capacity to heal itself when its structure and movement are working properly. Chiropractors are trained to assess how your spine and joints are moving, and their main tool for addressing restrictions is spinal adjustment, sometimes called manipulation.

What the training actually involves

Chiropractors complete a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, typically four years on top of undergraduate prerequisites, covering many of the same foundational sciences as medical school, anatomy, physiology, radiology and diagnosis, alongside extensive hands-on training in spinal assessment and adjustment technique. They’re not medical doctors and don’t prescribe medication or perform surgery, but they are licensed, regulated healthcare professionals who have to pass board exams and maintain ongoing continuing education to keep practicing.

What actually happens during an adjustment

Your first visit starts the way most healthcare assessments do, a conversation about your health history, what’s bothering you, and what’s changed recently, followed by a physical exam looking at your posture, spinal alignment, and how well specific joints are moving. From there, treatment usually centers on adjustment, using a quick, controlled force applied by hand to a specific joint to improve its movement. You’ll often hear a popping sound during this, which is just gas being released within the joint as pressure changes, and despite what a lot of people assume, that pop isn’t actually necessary for the treatment to work.

Not everyone needs, or wants, that quick thrust style of adjustment. For people with more sensitive presentations, osteoporosis, acute severe pain, or simply a preference for something gentler, there are slower, more controlled mobilization techniques that work a joint toward its end range without the sudden force. Which approach makes sense depends on your specific situation and your own comfort level, and that’s worth discussing directly at your assessment rather than assuming one style fits everyone.

What it’s commonly used for

Low back pain, neck pain and headaches are by far the most common reasons people book a chiropractic appointment, and they’re also the areas where the evidence behind spinal manipulation is strongest. Beyond that, we regularly see people for whiplash and other injuries following a car accident, general joint stiffness, sciatica, and ongoing muscle tension that hasn’t responded well to other approaches on their own.

Being honest about what the evidence shows

Spinal manipulation has a genuinely solid body of research behind it for certain kinds of low back pain, and there’s reasonable, if somewhat less consistent, support for its use in headaches and neck pain as well. That said, chiropractic care doesn’t work equally well for everyone, and if you haven’t noticed real improvement after a handful of sessions, that’s a legitimate signal to reassess rather than push through more of the same. We’d rather tell you that directly than keep booking you in indefinitely.

Safety and when adjustment isn’t the right call

Chiropractic adjustment is considered safe when it’s performed by a properly trained, licensed practitioner, and serious complications are genuinely rare. That said, they’re not zero, and it’s worth knowing what they are. Rare but real risks include a worsening of an existing disc issue, increased pressure on a nerve, and, specifically with neck adjustments, a rare type of stroke that’s been associated with cervical manipulation. Because of this, there are situations where adjustment isn’t appropriate, including severe osteoporosis, numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm or leg, a known cancer affecting the spine, an elevated stroke risk, or certain structural abnormalities in the upper neck. None of this is meant to alarm you, the large majority of people who receive chiropractic care have no issues at all, but a thorough intake is exactly how these situations get identified before treatment starts, not after.

It’s also normal to feel a bit sore, tired, or occasionally get a mild headache in the day or two following an adjustment. This usually settles on its own, and ice on the treated area can help if it’s bothering you.

Chiropractor or physiotherapist: which one do you actually need

This is one of the most common questions we get, and there isn’t always a clean answer, because the two professions overlap more than people expect. Broadly, chiropractic care tends to focus more heavily on spinal and joint adjustment as the primary treatment, while physiotherapy tends to build a larger portion of the plan around exercise, movement retraining and progressive rehabilitation, alongside manual therapy. For a lot of conditions, particularly low back pain, neck pain and headaches, either can genuinely help, and a combination of the two is often more effective than either alone, adjustment addressing joint restriction while exercise-based physiotherapy builds the strength and control that keeps the improvement from being temporary. Having both under one roof means we can actually coordinate that instead of you managing two separate, disconnected treatment plans.

Getting started Chiropractic

If you’re dealing with back pain, neck pain, headaches, or something related, and you’re not sure whether chiropractic care, physiotherapy, or a combination makes sense, that’s exactly the kind of question worth bringing to your first visit. You can book directly online, no referral required, and most extended health plans cover chiropractic care, with direct billing available for most providers.

Is chiropractic care safe?

Yes, for the large majority of people, when performed by a licensed, properly trained chiropractor. Serious complications are rare. A thorough health history at your first visit helps identify the small number of situations where adjustment isn’t appropriate.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor in Ontario?

No, chiropractic care is direct access in Ontario, meaning you can book an appointment without a doctor’s referral. Some extended health plans may request one for reimbursement, so it’s worth checking your specific plan.

Is the popping sound during an adjustment necessary or harmful?

It’s neither. The sound is just gas being released within the joint as pressure changes, and research hasn’t shown that the pop itself is necessary for the treatment to be effective. Gentler techniques without the pop are also available.

How many chiropractic sessions will I need?

This varies by condition and how you respond, but many people see meaningful change within 6 to 10 visits. If you’re not noticing improvement after a few weeks of consistent treatment, that’s worth discussing rather than continuing the same plan indefinitely.

Should I see a chiropractor or a physiotherapist?

For a lot of common conditions, either can help, and the two approaches often work well together, adjustment addressing joint restriction and physiotherapy building the strength and movement control that helps results last. Bringing your specific situation to an assessment is the most reliable way to figure out which fits, or whether a combination makes the most sense.
